MacVector

[prMac.com] Cambridge, United Kingdom - MacVector, Inc. has just released MacVector 13.5 for OS X. The latest release of MacVector has had a redesign and rewrite of existing tools to make comparing large sequences faster and to improve handling of NGS data. Additionally the new interface, introduced in MacVector 13.0, has had many 'tweaks' in response to user feedback. Plus a continued approach to performance tuning has ensured this release of MacVector is faster than ever.

  • Sequencher is so much easier to use than MacVector and has such a superior interface that I used the demo version of Sequencher for months rather than the lab copy of MacVector. Sequencher feels as though it is written by biologists that can write software, rather than programmers attempting to write biological software.
  • MacVector is the leading package of kind for Mac and an ideal solution for researchers who want a simple but comprehensive desktop sequence analysis application. MacVector provides sequence editing, primer design, Internet database searches, protein analysis, sequence confirmation, contig assembly capabilities, multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic reconstruction, coding region analysis.
  • Entering sequence into MacVector. The MacVector folder is in the Molecular Biology folder on the hard drive. Make sure you open the MacVector program by double-clicking on the MacVector icon on the screen (it looks like a hand holding on to a DNA molecule). You may also open MacVector from an alias in the apple menu.

Improvements include enhancements to Align To Reference, which now handles circular sequences, and Align to Folder, which will scan large NGS datasets with a DNA or protein query. Both tools also allow you to extract matching reads into FASTQ files for further analysis or assembly. Assembler will compare the expression level of genes across different reference assemblies and the optimized Dot Plot tool now allows comparisons of bacterial genomes in just a few seconds. The graphics Symbol Editor and floating Graphics Palette have been rewritten in preparation for MacVector moving to a 64-bit architecture (due with MacVector 14.0).

The graphics Symbol Editor and floating Graphics Palette have been rewritten in preparation for MacVector moving to a 64-bit architecture (due with MacVector 14.0). The other main enhancements have been aimed at better handling of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) files, particularly with the Align To Folder and Assembler Velvet de novo assembly functionality. There has also been some code optimization to better handle the analysis of large genomic sequences, particularly noticeable with the Pustell Matrix 'dot-plot' functionality.

MacVector, Inc's CEO, Dr. Kevin Kendall, said 'With MacVector 13.5 we've addressed many of the problems facing users who are confronted with large sets of NGS sequencing reads, but are really just interested in a few genes. You are able to scan a related protein sequence against such a dataset to pick out reads for just that sequence, simplifying subsequent assembly. Furthermore a continued approach to performance tuning has ensured this release of MacVector is faster than ever.'
